Long-term benefits realization in the Service area
Volvo Construction ensures ongoing benefits realization for their clients by helping them optimize their business with innovative concepts in the service area. The new service solution is based on data collection from the construction machinery to improve the operating economy. The backbone of the concept is thorough training of the engineers, who gain a much better insight into their machines and are able to understand - and act on - some of the factors that have a direct impact on the operating economy of the major construction projects.

"By developing a new service model in close collaboration with our customers, we have succeeded quite well in optimizing their business."
Challenge
Volvo Construction Equipment is already among the best to deliver on the service market. Competent service technicians meet the customer with a Volvo Service Car, equipped with all the necessary tools to perform all kinds of service and repairs immediately at the customer's building site. However, Volvo Construction Machines wanted to provide even better service to their customers. It was a golden opportunity to exploit the fact that all Volvo machines are able to deliver data with information about the general conditions of the machine, but also data on for example, how long time the machine is idling and how large its fuel consumption is. Idle time and fuel consumption are two important parameters that equal operating costs for the customer, and structured insight into this area offers great benefits. The challenge for Volvo was therefore to develop and offer a product for the service market that would provide Volvo customers with thorough and useful insight into idle times and fuel consumption, enabling the customers to run their business even better.
Solution
Together with the existing data, which is extracted from the machines, the central element of the solution is the people who work with the machines on a daily basis. The solution therefore contains a very thorough training of the machine operators. Some of the training takes place in a specially landscaped area in Eskilstuna Sweden, where the machine operators are trained in advanced technology while being able to test it in the real machines. “The solution fits well with Volvo's motto that smart labor is about people,” says Jens Ejsing, CEO. The solution also includes interaction between IT systems as well as professional handling of the "big data" that the Volvo machines provide.
Result
"Our new service solution has a slogan: "Do you idle, because you are afraid to get stuck?"- and with a twinkle in the eye it has given great resonance in the market" says Jens Ejsing. “The best thing about the solution is that it does a lot of good for our customers. They get more out of the work they do, and they have much better insight into, how Volvo machines are best used for the tasks to be performed. The result is that Volvo can offer a unique service to our customers and it gives a lot of confidence in the market."
The new service offer from Volvo provides customers with a clear operating advantage, as it simply enables the customer to run the business better and more efficiently.
The first figures from customers clearly shows that they get great continuous benefits by using Volvo's new service solutions including the new "Gold Plus" service solution. The machine operators get a better insight into their machines, and, very importantly, they also achieve a broad understanding of some of the factors, which have a direct impact on operating results, and can help to ensure the best possible economy in the projects.
