Optimisation of production capacity at a larger Danish manufacturing company

A large Danish manufacturing company needs to upgrade a 31-year-old mitre saw that no longer meets the factory's requirements.

kaastrup|andersen has been selected to determine how and with what the mitre saw can be replaced.

However, the solution will not simply be to replace the old saw, but instead to replace two saws and optimise production, free up floor space, and ensure full traceability in the assembly process.

This case describes the collaboration, the chosen solution, and the specific results.

Challenge

The 31-year-old mitre saw no longer meets the manufacturing company's quality requirements. The saw has limitations in both capacity and capability, and it also ties up key employees with specialised knowledge to operate it. An upgrade is needed to increase efficiency and free up resources for other important tasks.

"It was crucial for us not just to replace the old saw, but to find a solution that optimised the entire production process. By implementing a semi-automatic mitre saw with traceability technology, we managed to free up floor space, increase efficiency, and ensure better resource utilisation. The tailored solution provides the company with both short-term and long-term benefits in terms of production capacity and flexibility."

The solution

kaastrup|andersen assigns a senior project manager with expert knowledge. After a thorough analysis of the factory and its needs, the kaastrup|andersen consultant leads the process of identifying a solution that not only replaces the outdated saw but also replaces an additional mitre saw. This approach frees up valuable floor space, which is then used to improve internal logistics.

The solution is a semi-automatic mitre saw that uses an advanced algorithm to optimise material utilisation and ensure maximum use of bar lengths. To increase traceability, items are laser-marked with DataMatrix codes, ensuring correct identification throughout the subsequent assembly process.

kaastrup|andersen prepares the requirements specification in close collaboration with the manufacturing company, including an option for an automatic robot for sorting and stacking.

The result

In collaboration with the client's purchasing department, kaastrup|andersen selects the right supplier and develops a detailed plan for how to replace the two old saws, install, and commission the new mitre saw without disrupting production scheduling or delivery obligations.

It was crucial for us not only to replace the old saw but to find a solution that optimised the entire production process. By implementing a semi-automatic mitre saw with traceability technology, we managed to free up floor space, increase efficiency, and ensure better resource utilisation. The tailored solution provides the company with both short-term and long-term benefits in terms of production capacity and flexibility.

The new technology results in full traceability of all items via laser-marked DataMatrix codes. The algorithm simultaneously ensures optimal utilisation of standard bar lengths, improving both efficiency and resource use.

kaastrup|andersen plays a central role as project manager throughout the process, ensuring that the solution is tailored to the client's needs. This results in an improvement in the factory's capability and capacity.
