Optimisation and establishment of an SMT line in production

The SMT line requires both fault diagnosis and optimisation

A large Danish manufacturing company is experiencing issues with an SMT line that requires both fault diagnosis and optimisation. kaastrup|andersen is brought in to ensure that the line functions as expected and, at the same time, to specify and implement a brand-new SMT line.

This case describes how kaastrup|andersen’s senior consultant tackles the challenge and the results achieved.

Challenge

The manufacturing company is facing problems with an existing SMT line that does not perform as required. kaastrup|andersen assigns a senior consultant with expertise in the field to diagnose and resolve the issues, as well as to specify and position a new SMT line within the existing facilities. The goal is to ensure that the current line performs optimally while seamlessly integrating the new line into production.

"SMT lines consist of units from various manufacturers, making interface specifications and contractual agreements crucial. The success of this project is attributed to our ability to develop a detailed specification that ensures the right units are delivered on time and integrate seamlessly with one another."

Hans A. Pedersen
Senior Consultant, kaastrup|andersen A/S

The solution

kaastrup|andersen conducts a structured fault diagnosis of the existing SMT line. Through meticulous monitoring and benchmarking against other electronics manufacturers, multiple hypotheses are formulated and tested to identify the root causes of the issues. After troubleshooting and replacing a defective component, the line starts functioning as expected without unplanned downtime.

Building on these insights, kaastrup|andersen specifies the new SMT line, which consists of 16 units from four different suppliers. A detailed specification is created for each unit based on the company’s:

  • Production strategy
  • Benchmark results
  • Previous experiences

Additionally, the specification includes requirements for integrating the individual machines into a cohesive production line that complies with CE certification standards. This covers:

  • Overall line control
  • Safety circuits
  • Emergency stops and other safety mechanisms

Result

kaastrup|andersen supports the procurement process involving the four suppliers, ensuring that the approved budget is adhered to. In close collaboration with production planning, the removal of the old line and the installation of the new SMT line are carefully coordinated to maintain the necessary production capacity throughout the process. This guarantees a smooth transition to the new technology and optimises production.
