Manufacturing company establishes a 4,000 sqm future-proof production facility

The company is responsible for construction but quickly recognises the need for an external partner to manage the project and ensure progress.

Our client, a large Danish manufacturing company, is establishing a 4,000 sqm production facility and needs to ensure that the factory is ready when the new production lines arrive.

This case describes how kaastrup|andersen, in collaboration with the client, ensures that the new production facility is completed on time.

Challenge

The manufacturing company needs to establish a new production facility, but the equipment for the production lines, which will be installed in the new facility, is still in the specification phase and has not yet been ordered. The project has a tight timeline, as the launch and subsequent production start are already scheduled.

A key challenge is aligning the requirements of the production equipment with the factory layout. At the same time, it is essential to ensure that the equipment is specified in a way that fits the factory’s conditions. Delays in this process could result in significant costs.

"This was one of those projects where, as a project manager, I had to draw not only on my project management toolbox but also on my expertise and experience in both product development and production. Throughout the process, I relied heavily on my knowledge of machinery and construction, which helped drive the project to completion faster."

Solution

A senior consultant from kaastrup|andersen is assigned to the project to lead and manage the process, ensuring that the project is completed on time.

The task requires deep technical insight into machine technology, construction, material selection, workplace safety, architecture, and logistics. With broad project management experience and solid expertise in production, the consultant contributes by:

  • Planning and managing the construction process
  • Preparing budgets
  • Obtaining building permits, including fire safety approvals
  • Continuously resolving technical questions
  • Addressing challenges and maintaining ongoing clarification with the steering group

The consultant's experience quickly proves invaluable in handling the many daily decisions. This includes determining the floor’s load-bearing capacity, access routes, and logistics flow, as well as specifying the number and placement of:

  • Gates for optimal access
  • Electrical panels and power supply for production equipment
  • Extraction systems
  • IT and Wi-Fi infrastructure
  • Ventilation and heating systems
  • Office, meeting, and canteen facilities

Additionally, the outdoor areas are redesigned with level access routes, new parking facilities, a gatehouse, and a barrier system.

Result

The new production facility is completed on time and ready to receive the large production lines. Production start-up proceeds as planned, and future-proof solutions within IT, lighting, extraction systems, and flexible power supply ensure efficient operations.

Furthermore, the consultant advises the manufacturing company on the establishment of a level access ramp, allowing direct access between production and trailers, as well as efficient handling of packaging for the packing line.

The collaboration between the client and kaastrup|andersen ensures that the production setup is not only future-proof but also cost-effective and operationally reliable for many years to come.
